Join MaptimeSEA for The Haunted Map: A Cartographic Journey Through the European Folklore Behind Familiar Halloween Costumes on Thursday, October 8, 2026, from 6:00–8:00 PM PT at the Anderson Seminar Room, #271 on the 2nd floor of Building CSE2, the Bill and Melinda Gates Center for Computer Science and Engineering on the University of Washington campus (3800 E Stevens Way NE, Seattle, WA).
We will explore the map origins of the Headless Horseman, ghosts, witches, vampires, werewolves, and other familiar Halloween figures. The workshop also introduces color theory, typography, and visual hierarchy, then brings spatial data, photos, text, and layout elements together in a static map. Some QGIS experience is helpful, but the workshop is designed to welcome newcomers.
Agenda
- Introduction to MaptimeSEA and code of conduct (10 minutes)
- Color theory, typography, visual hierarchy, and the creatures (15 minutes)
- Haunted Map tutorial (1 hour 15 minutes)
- Wrap-up (10 minutes)
What to bring
Bring a charged laptop and anything you need to be comfortable sitting for two hours.
Prepare for the workshop
Install QGIS 3.16 or newer (the long-term release should work; the instructor will use QGIS 3.44.15). MaptimeSEA will provide the event data, fonts, and other materials before the meeting.
Who should attend
Anyone interested in cartography, design, or supernatural folklore is welcome. The workshop is designed for newcomers, and prior GIS or QGIS experience is optional.
Instructor
Matt Stevenson teaches cartography, spatial analysis, web mapping, and GIS project management. He has worked with government and nonprofit organizations for 27 years and focuses his personal mapping work on monsters, ghosts, cryptids, and European folklore.
After the meeting, attendees may join the group at a nearby brewery.

TCAT at the UW CEE 500 Transportation Seminar: Dr. Anat Caspi

Dr. Anat Caspi, Director of the University of Washington’s Taskar Center for Accessible Technology and a Research Principal in the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering, will speak as part of the UW Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering’s CEE 500 Transportation Seminar.
Dr. Caspi’s work focuses on accessible technology, transportation and mobility, applied machine learning, ubiquitous computing, and responsive urban environments.
The presentation title, abstract, location, attendance details, and any virtual-access information will be added when they are confirmed.
TCAT at Walktober 2026: Data Collection Tools and Pedestrian Safety

Dr. Anat Caspi, Director of the University of Washington Taskar Center for Accessible Technology, will participate in a Maryland Department of Transportation Walktober webinar focused on data collection tools and pedestrian safety.
The virtual panel will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Eastern on October 22, 2026 as part of Maryland’s Walktober programming for National Pedestrian Safety Awareness Month. The invitation follows Dr. Caspi’s recent presentation at the AASHTO conference in Baltimore on measuring active transportation project impacts from planning through implementation.
