The Taskar Center for Accessible Technology participated in CREATE Community Day 2026, the University of Washington’s annual forum on accessible technology, disability advocacy, and accessibility research.
Kunal Mehta represented TCAT during the Transportation and Urban Mobility panel alongside Jon Froehlich, Kenny Salvini, and Anna Zivarts.
The panel explored how disabled people experience transportation systems, where trips break down, and how cities can better understand and respond to accessibility barriers.
Kunal discussed TCAT’s work connecting lived experience with the maps, data systems, planning tools, and maintenance processes used by public agencies. This approach helps accessibility concerns move beyond general reports and become information that planners can interpret, prioritize, and connect to action.
The discussion also considered pedestrian trips as connected journeys rather than isolated sidewalks, crossings, curb ramps, transit stops, or entrances. A single piece of infrastructure may appear accessible while the full trip still fails because physical, digital, and public systems do not connect.
TCAT’s work aims to strengthen the link between community knowledge, pedestrian data, accessible navigation, and the institutions responsible for planning and maintaining public transportation systems.
